Out of Mind . . . Out of Reach?

I recently had a conversation with a friend who is going for a big promotion at work. He is incredibly talented and competent at his job, and he has recently been on a roll, kicking some major goals. As a result, he’s been getting a lot of well-earned praise and recognition from his superiors.

I asked him what he thought his chances were of getting the promotion he wants.

“Oh, probably 50-50,” he said.

To which I replied, “Come on! You’ve been rocking it lately. Surely your chances are better than that!”

“Okay,” he said. “My chances probably are better than that . . . but I don’t want to get my hopes up too much in case I don’t get it.”

Have you ever done something like that? Studies have shown that people do indeed suppress their desire for things that they fear might be out of reach.
